> [!ABSTRACT] > [5G-PLANET](https://www.5g-planet.lu/) is a Luxembourg-based initiative aimed at raising public awareness about the capabilities and applications of 5G technology, particularly in the realm of connected mobility. By creating a digital twin of Luxembourg's 5G infrastructure, the project demonstrates how 5G can enhance intelligent transport systems and [[Connected and Automated Mobility]] applications. > [!FACTSHEET] > - **Funding**: Department of Media, Connectivity and Digital Policy (SMC) > - **Duration**: 2022-2023 > - **My role**: Coordinator ![](https://youtu.be/lusN0Z5GC-g) ## Context The advent of 5G technology offers unprecedented capabilities compared to previous generations, paving the way for a multitude of new services. Despite its potential, the general public and some businesses remain unaware of its benefits. 5G's complexity further complicates its adoption. In this context, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) launched 5G-PLANET to educate and demonstrate the practical applications of 5G, focusing on connected mobility as a prominent use case. ## Key objectives The 5G-PLANET project focused on the following primary objectives: 1. **Educating the public on 5G technology**: Develop a platform to make complex 5G concepts accessible, using connected mobility scenarios to illustrate potential applications. 2. **Creating a digital twin of Luxembourg's 5G infrastructure**: Develop a virtual replica to demonstrate the deployment and utilisation of 5G networks for CCAM applications. 3. **Supporting decision-making for 5G network planning**: Provide insights into system architecture, performance impacts, and the benefits of 5G over other communication technologies to guide future investments. ## Outcomes The 5G-PLANET project achieved several significant outcomes, including: - **Development of demonstrators**: Created three demonstrators to answer frequently asked questions about connected mobility and 5G technology. - **Public awareness and education**: Raised awareness about 5G's potential through the digital twin concept, recreating a digital copy of part of Luxembourg’s 5G infrastructure to demonstrate its capabilities. - **Enhanced understanding of 5G applications in mobility**: Provided insights into how 5G can benefit connected mobility, including vehicle platooning and smarter transportation solutions. These are just some examples of the project's achievements. For more information, visit the [5G-PLANET website](https://www.5g-planet.lu/).
